Double sided tapes have an adhesive that is
pressure-sensitive, which is present on both sides. It is made to stick two
surfaces together and leave a clean and smooth result. Different types of double sided tapes have
been designed that have their different purposes and can be used for different
instances. This type of adhesive tape is often compared to liquid glue and
mechanical fastening. In case you are wondering why double sided tape is better
than the two methods, below are the reasons.
Double sided tape vs.
liquid glue
Liquid glue needs to be assembled first to make its handling
strength takes place, which usually last from seconds to hours depending on the
type of liquid glue and the material. On the other hand, double sided tape that
do not require seconds to hours to be effective. In addition, the length of
time that must be waited to be able for liquid glue to be effective, there is a
chance that is can be processes and moved, which may result to disassembling of
two surfaces adhere together. One of the similarities of the two is that double
tape and liquid glue both require application process, which must avoid a
molecule upon which an enzyme acts to make adhering be successful. It is why
cleaning of the surfaces or materials are very important and necessary whatever
bonding material you will use.
It is true that liquid glue can be useful in uneven and
irregular surfaces. Although double adhesive tape can also do it, especially if
thinner sticky tape will be used. These thin product layers can make the bonded
surfaces’ gap become small as possible. However, once the liquid glue adhered
two materials, then there is no chance to dissemble them for rework without
making any damage. While for double sided tape, it is possible to adjust the
materials, which makes it flexible. This advantage is only possible if the
liner is not yet removed fully. Overall, using sticky tape can make the
adhering process faster and easier.
Double sided tape vs.
mechanical fastening
Traditional mechanical fastening can be done in two methods,
which involves welding and using of screws and rivets. The two methods have
their own advantages and disadvantages. For using screws and rivets, some of
its pros are two adhered materials can be easily separated and bonding of
different types of materials is possible. However, the mechanical fastening
using screws and rivets can damage the material, and stresses are concentrated.
The risk of corrosion is also high because of the screws and rivets that will
be used. Aside from this, before being able to fasten materials using screws
and bolts, you will have to drill holes in the materials, which makes the
chance of damaging it become higher especially if stresses because of shock or
vibration are not used up.
On the other hand, using double sided tape in adhering materials will not damage it and there is no need to drill holes into it. Using sticky tape makes fastening in an invisible way becomes possible. In addition, using double tape can make the surface not only smooth but also clean. Because of the sealing function of the adhesive tape, dusts and other elements will be prevented destroying or making the surfaces loosen their stickiness because of dirt.
