Tapes are available in wide
range of types and colours, which are made of different materials. Each
type of tape has their own purpose. Whether you are going to use it at home,
office, or business industries, there is no doubt that tapes are very useful in
our daily lives. We can use tape when doing art crafts, fix electrical wires,
and even in panel mounting. Below are different types of tapes that we use
almost every day and their uses.
Double-sided tape
The adhesive of this type of tape is present on its both
sides. Double-sided
tape is a pressure-sensitive tape is created to stick two different surfaces
together. Rather than overlaying two objects, they are stick with the tape
that is not visible. A double-sided tape is used when the user wants to make
the project look neater and better, which can be either dimensional or thin.
One of the popular kind of double-sided tape is the mounting tape that is used
in doing panel mounting in several industries such as aviation, marine, and
railway.
Adhesive tape
Adhesive tape is a kind of tape that has an adhesive-coated
back material, which adhesives and backing materials depend on the purpose of
the tape. There are four main types of adhesive tape including
pressure-sensitive tape, water activated tape, heat sensitive tape, and drywall
tape.
a.
Pressure-sensitive tape – the adhesive of this
kind of tape is pressure-sensitive. The adhesive serves as the backing material
to a tape with different materials including cloth, paper, metal foil, and
plastic film. This type of tape does not need heat or solvent to be activated.
b.
Water activated tape – this type of tape
automatically becomes sticky when it is moistened. It is also called as gummed
tape or gummed paper tape that serves as the backing material for kraft paper.
c.
Heat sensitive tape – this type of tape that is
tack-free and just become activated with a heat source. It is usually used in
packaging including for the tear strip tape attached on cigarette packs. There
are heat sensitive tapes that lose its sticky form and become fully release
when activated with a heat source. This tape is usually used in semiconductor
industry.
d.
Drywall tape – this tape is used to create
joints between the sheets of drywall materials. It can be made out of mesh,
cloth, or paper. The tape sometimes has an adhesive, which is gummed or pressure-sensitive.
Duct tape
This type of tape has a backing material made of cloth or
scrim. It is a pressure-sensitive tape usually has polyethylene coating. Duct
tape is available on different kinds, which have several types of adhesives and
backing materials. One of the most popular kind is the gaffer tape. It is
designed that can be clean once removed unlike other kinds of duct tape. There
are also duct tapes that are resistant to heat, which is used in ventilation,
sealing heating, and on ducts of air-condition units. It is available in
different colours but it is usually grey or black.
